Tutorial Services

Description

Tutorial services are offered through the Academic Success and Enrichment Services department of University College. For the students’ convenience, tutoring sessions are held in various locations across the campus. While our primary focus is to provide tutorial services for those courses in the General Education Curriculum (GEC), our graduate, professional, and undergraduate tutors are equipped to meet the needs of many students enrolled in many upper- and lower-level courses.

Tutors seek to engage students in dialogue by asking probing questions that help students develop critical thinking skills by assisting them in articulating what they do not understand to become proactive learners.

To get the most from your tutorial experience:

  • Come prepared. Bring all the materials that you would use in your class (e.g., textbook, notes, calculator, syllabus, writing materials, and laptop, if needed).
  • Come ready to learn. Tutors will provide valuable instruction on various learning strategies to be used to assist you, but you must be receptive to their input.
  • Come early and often. Tutoring is not a "wham, bam, thank you, ma’am" service!  Tutoring works best when students reach out for academic support early in the academic semester and use services consistently.
  • Tutors will not do your homework for you, but they will ensure that you understand the material.
  •  Disclosure of Information. If you have a documented disability that is having a negative effect on your academic career, it is okay to share that information with the tutor. Tutors are bound by a student confidentiality contract that ensures students’ privacy is protected.

To set up an appointment with one of our knowledgeable tutors, log into myEOL and click "Schedule an Appointment" (use NCCU username/password) under the "Navigate" section or use the GUIDE mobile app. Walk-ins will be accepted, but appointments will be given priority. Alternatively, visit Upswing

We hope that you find this information helpful and applaud you in taking the necessary steps towards having a meaningful and successful academic career!
