Duties and Responsibilities

The Information Technology graduate assistant works as an integral member of the Information Technology Services Division and will display all of the following baseline skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize projects based on deadlines
  • Good basic technology knowledge
  • Ability to quickly troubleshoot and triage multiple issues

Please note: Part of the job will require interaction with faculty and other professional staff. The applicant must be personable, friendly, outgoing and a customer service rock star.

Additional knowledge required will depend upon the position that the graduate administrative assistant is hired to fulfill.

The award is for $4,000/semester or $8,000 for the academic year. The fellow will work 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. Fellows must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours each semester.

To work as a graduate assistant, you must:

  • Work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) at NCCU, usually in a job related to your program of study.
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to have your assistantship renewed each semester.
  • Be a regularly admitted full-time student.

Your assistantship application must be submitted along with your application for admission. You will find out whether you have received a graduate assistantship after you are admitted to your graduate program.

  • Fall semester: April 15

  • You must have a minimum of two full-time semesters of course work remaining (18 hours).
  • You must be enrolled in 9 credit hours per semester.
  • If you are a first-year graduate student who has earned no graduate-level credit but has been admitted to a graduate degree program, your cumulative undergraduate grade point average must be at least 3.0.

IT graduate administrative assistant work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment, with some physical effort required. Some walking and transport of equipment between various locations will be required.

Each year, the number of applications for assistantships significantly exceeds the number of available positions, so the selection process is very competitive; not everyone who applies is invited to interview. Applicants are strongly encouraged to apply early and to make sure their application file is complete and accurate by the annual application deadline date. The selection process involves the following steps:

  1. Eligible students submit their application materials online.
  2. Each open assistantship position will be handled by a Search Committee designated by the ITS division. Search Committee members will review the pool of completed student applicant files and select top candidates.
  3. Top candidates are invited to interview and be evaluated by the Search Committee, and the committee selects the top candidate.
  4. The Search Committee delegate will contact the selected candidate.  
  5. The selected candidate information will be submitted to the ITS Resource Management Office.
