Date:

On April 4–5, 2025, the Department of History will host a symposium honoring the scholarship and teaching of Dr. Lolita Brockington, a member of the faculty who passed in 2023.

This symposium engages Professor Brockington’s career and field-defining work. It promises to explore some of the ways that her work has been taken up by her peers and subsequent generations of scholars. Our convening recalls Brockington as a gifted teacher and mentor, a cherished colleague and friend who taught at North Carolina Central University from 1991 to 2002. It invites scholarly dialogues and caring reflections upon her time with us and seeks to uncover the ways that her service and contributions might continue to challenge and guide our teaching and scholarly agendas in both Latin American historiography and African diaspora historiography more broadly defined.

The symposium will take place on Friday, April 4, at 5 p.m. in the Criminal Justice Building, Room 201, and on Saturday, April 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Miller-Morgan Auditorium.
