
Join the NCCU Department of Music and the NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble for final night of the 13th annual Fall Guest Artist series, featuring the award-winning NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble in concert Friday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m. in the B.N. Duke Annex New Band Room. This event will serve as the grand finale of a series of events throughout the week that highlight the artistic innovation, improvisation and different forms of expression within the NCCU Jazz Studies program.
The NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble provides vocalists with the opportunity to study advanced concepts in the performance of classic, standard and contemporary vocal ensemble jazz literature for small and large vocal jazz ensembles.
Become a Member of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble
To join the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, you must:
- Be enrolled at North Carolina Central University
- Audition (see details below)
The audition requirements for the Vocal Jazz Ensemble are as follows:
- Performance of a blues melody, with two choruses of improvisation
- Performance of a melody based on the “I Got Rhythm” chord progression, with two choruses of improvisation
- Performance of a Latin jazz-type tune (e.g.,"Girl from Ipanema" or "Wave"), with two choruses of improvisation
- Performance of a “ballad” or slow tune, with the melody stylized; one time through
- Performance of different scales (major; natural, melodic and harmonic minors; and diminished) chosen at random by the audition judges
- Sight reading of a piece of music selected by the audition judges
The NCCU Jazz Ensemble provides instrumentalists with the opportunity to study advanced concepts in the performance of classic, standard and contemporary big band jazz literature.
