
NCCU Jazz Studies is co-presenting JazzGirls Day as a new department initiative and annual event. The event features cellist/vocalist Shana Tucker and bassist Dr. Natalie Boeyink, Lydia Dudley, Serena Wiley, Jasmine Best, Shaena Ryan Martin and Dr. Lenora Helm Hammonds.
JazzGirls Day will include jam sessions, workshops, mentoring and an evening concert. The event is free for all participants and open to middle and high school girls interested in playing jazz. Instrumentalists and vocalists are all welcome! Bring your instruments. Drums and amps will be provided.

General Schedule
- April 4–8, 2022: Institute Week
- April 9, 2022: JazzGirls Day
Monday through Friday
Events on these days will consist of after-school small-group and large-ensemble "rehearsal sessions" on Zoom. Participants will engage via Zoom with faculty and NCCU student alum as mentors to receive instruction from the staff of Tribe Jazz Orchestra® (TJO) JazzGirls Day and Institute.
Saturday: JazzGirls Day
- 11 a.m.: Check-In
- 12–2 p.m.:
- Workshop and music chat
- Rehearsal with participants
- 2 p.m.: Community event (free and open to the public)
- Panel discussion with mentors in a masterclass style
- TJO Institute staff will give a mini-performance with Q&A after
- 3:30–4:45 p.m. (resume closed session with participants and mentors only)
- Jams with mentors and participants playing music from the week's Zoom sessions
- 5 p.m.: JazzGirls Day workshop events end
- 6–9 p.m.: Evening Culminating Concerts
- Location: Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Fayetteville Street, Durham, NC
- Ticketed event (JazzGirls Day participants free)
- 6:30 p.m.: Opening Concert: JazzGirls Day alums of NCCU and Tribe Jazz Orchestra® women instrumentalists and singers
- 7:30–8:30 p.m.: Feature Concert: Tribe Jazz Orchestra® JazzGirls with guests Shana Tucker and Natalie Boeyink performing with Lydia Salett Dudley, Salome Serena Wiley, Shaena Ryan Martin, Jasmine Best and Lenora Zenzalai Helm
