American Red Cross Lifeguard Training
What to Expect
The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course teaches skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services take over. This class includes lifeguarding, first aid and CPR/AED. Candidates must pass a prerequisite swimming skill evaluation.
Prerequisite Swimming Skill Evaluation
- 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, the breaststroke or a combination of both
- Tread water using legs only for 2 minutes without support or stopping
- Within 1 minute and 40 seconds, swim 20 yards, surface dive to 7–10 feet and retrieve a 10-lb brick. Return to the surface and swim back to the starting point with both hands holding the brick and keeping the face at the surface. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

- July 6, Thursday: 5–8 p.m.
- July 7, Friday: 5–8 p.m.
- July 8, Saturday: 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
- July 9, Sunday: 8 a.m.–6 p.m.
Courses are open to all NCCU students. Participants must attend all class dates.
