The NCCU Art Museum presents "Common Threads: The Art of Charles Joyner," an exhibition featuring mixed-media works that explore the cultural connections between African and African American communities through collage, photography, painting, and printmaking.
"Common Threads: The Art of Charles Joyner" showcases layered compositions inspired by Charles Joyner’s travels and research in Ghana, West Africa. Incorporating his own photography with imagery drawn from West African textiles, crafts, architecture, and symbols such as Kente cloth and Adinkra symbols, Charles Joyner’s work explores themes of identity, ancestry, spirituality, and cultural memory.
Charles Joyner’s connection to NCCU spans decades. In 1973, he joined the NCCU Department of Art, where he helped establish the Visual Communications concentration with graphic design educator Sam Molina, contributing to the growth of what is now the department of Art and Design.
The exhibition runs Tuesday, August 4, through Sunday, October 18, 2026, and is free and open to the public. An opening reception featuring the artist will be held on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m. during NCCU Homecoming Week. The event is free and open to the public.
The NCCU Art Museum is located at 580 E. Lawson St., across from the Farrison-Newton Communications Building.
