The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Department of Criminal Justice (CJ) Center for Homeland Security and Emergency Management has been selected to receive an appointment with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Summer Research Team (SRT) Program, which is May through August 2024. ORISE is operated by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) under contract with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The purpose of the DHS SRT Program is to increase and enhance the scientific leadership at minority serving institutions (MSIs) in research areas that support the mission and goals of DHS. This 10-week summer research program provides faculty and student research teams with the opportunity to conduct research at a university-based DHS Centers of Excellence (DHS Centers). The weekly compensation for graduate and undergraduate students is $950.00 and $750.00, respectively.

The NCCU SRT consists of Dr. Julian Muhammad, assistant professor; Daisha Ingram, graduate student; and Erick Espinoza, undergraduate student. Dr. Harvey McMurray, professor and executive director of the NCCU Institute for Homeland Security and Emergency Management, will serve as advisor to the research team.

The team will conduct their research at the DHS Center for Accelerating Operational Efficiency, located at Arizona State University.  Their research project is entitled "Strategies to Integrate Disaster Telemedicine into Local Emergency Preparedness Planning and Response Operations." This project is aimed at exploring the use of disaster telemedicine as an effective tool in emergency response and recovery operations, especially for triaging and assessing the injured through remote electronic communications between on-scene emergency responders and/or survivors and medical personnel at stationary or mobile healthcare facilities.

Following the successful completion of the summer research project, the NCCU SRT will be eligible for up to $100,000 to continue their research at NCCU for the 2024–2025 academic year.
