The Touch for Art Braille

Date Published:

The Touch for Art Braille exhibit focuses on the concept of interpreting art not through visual images and sight, but through the sense of touch. Participants cannot see visual images with their eyes, but can convey artistic expression through their hands, using unconventional techniques to challenge sensory boundaries. One of my students was a Duke Eye Center patient, who brought a CD documenting the event, to introduce me to the touchable gallery exhibit. I gained a new and unique perspective as I learned about the exhibit and listened to how these artists used the sense of touch to convey thoughts and insights about art, paintings, and sculptures. I felt an amazing connection to the project and its mission. So, I integrated the elements of the exhibit into my own course and my students and I produced some touchable art works of our own to share with people who aren’t able to see. NC Central University Studio Art student works will be showcasing at Duke Clinic Art and Health.
