The Office of Community Engagement and Service (OCES) is now accepting work-study and volunteer student registrations for the America Reads Program that supports Durham Public Schools.
Students will mentor and tutor K-third graders.
When registering in GET Connected, please indicate next to your last name either "V" for volunteer or "W" for work-study. If both are applicable, place "VW" next to your last name.
You must complete a criminal background check application with Durham Public Schools by visiting their website (under "Volunteering").
Upon registration, an email response will be sent to you to complete an America Reads application that will be reviewed prior to setting up an interview. Remember, you are required to complete and submit a background check through the Durham Public Schools volunteer link: https://www.dpsnc.net/domain/133.
Your start date will depend on background clearance.
The goal is to have every child read on grade level by the end of the third grade. The America Read Program currently serves six Durham Public Schools surrounding the university, referred to as the “Eagle Village” schools. America READS tutors serve at least 8–10 hours a week at local elementary schools, working individually with children in reading and language arts under the supervision of a teacher.
